The historical challenges of monitoring EtCO2 in the NICU included: competing for tidal volume with sample flow, increased dead space of airway adapters, and accidental extubations due to heavy mainstream sensors.
Microstream® technology answers these challenges by requiring only a 50cc flow rate so as not to compete with the infant tidal volume. The Microstream® Neonatal Airway Adapter has only 0.5cc dead space (maximum) and the neonatal nasal cannula can accommodate the non-intubated patient.
Microstream® capnography provides value in the NICU by assisting healthcare workers to:
- Verify and maintain correct ET tube placement
- Assess ventilatory status during ventilator weaning and post-extubation
- Reduce the number of ABGs with continuous non-invasive monitoring
- Determine adequacy of alveolar emptying
