Microstream Technology

Innovations in Breath Sampling Circuit Design

Technical innovation did not stop with Microstream® MCS™ monitoring technology. Oridion also developed a set of unique components for the breath sampling circuit. Identified by the trade name, FilterLine®, these components include the following:

  • Normal and high humidity sampling lines for intubated patients
  • Sampling lines with nasal cannulae for nonintubated patients
  • Airway adapters, provided separately or integrated with the sample line

The FilterLine® system builds on Microstream® technology to further solve moisture and occlusion problems prevalent in other capnography systems.

Sampling Lines

The FilterLine® breath sample circuit incorporates the sample line and hydrophobic filter in one component. The hollow longitudinal structure of the filter and its linear orientation allow laminar gas flow within the sample line, which improves accuracy and response time, even at high respiratory rates. These features, along with the small sample cell and low flow rate, give Microstream® its advantage in accurately monitoring patients with small respiratory volumes.

Positioning Flexibility - Conventional sidestream technology requires a separate water trap that the clinician must attach in an upright position in order for it to operate properly. The FilterLine® sampling circuit, with its built-in filter, can function in any orientation. This important feature enables monitoring during patient motion or transport, and eliminates the hassles of maintaining a water trap.

Narrow Microbore Tubing for Fast Response - FilterLine® sampling circuits are made with microbore tubing that has a 1.0 mm internal diameter. The small diameter of the sampling line coupled with a laminar low flow rate shortens the time between a breath and the waveform appearance on the monitor.

Nafion? Combats Humidity - For high-humidity applications, such as long-term mechanical ventilation, a special patient-dedicated breath sampling circuit was developed. This circuit contains Nafion?, which compensates for humidification by allowing water vapor to escape through the tubing.

Airway Adapter

The Microstream® airway adapter was engineered with unique features that prevent occlusions from entering the sampling line, improve response time, and allow flexibility in positioning the breathing circuit. The lightweight design reduces the risk of endotracheal tube kinking and accidental extubation.

Multiple-Channel Design - A conventional airway adapter has only one sample channel that can easily become obstructed or allow liquids to penetrate the sample line. The Microstream® airway adapter has multiple channels with narrow hydrophobic openings, each facing a different direction. This design permits the airway adapter to be used in any orientation and prevents the sample line from being occluded by water or patient secretions.

Narrow Channels for Fast Response - As with the microbore tubing in the FilterLine® circuits, the small diameter of the airway adapter channel entries and their proximity to the ventilation path enhances response time.
